One of the more interesting discoveries upstairs at Graceland is this Good News Bible – Silver Jubilee Edition, produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1977.
The Silver Jubilee inspired countless commemorative items, and Elvis appears to have had several of them, including this Bible, a black leather bookmark bearing Queen Elizabeth's Royal Cypher ("E II R" — Elizabeth II Regina), and a decorative tray featuring portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip that was found in the Graceland kitchen.
As with many items in the collection, we're not entirely sure how or why Elvis acquired these pieces, possibly a gift from a fan, but they offer a fascinating glimpse into the eclectic objects that found their way into his home. Sometimes the mystery is part of the story.
#ElvisHistory: June 2nd, 1969:
#ElvisPresley released the album
From Elvis In Memphis.
It is seen as a triumphant return to form after his days of singing movie soundtracks.
The album is considered to be one of the finest of Presley's career.
It's included on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list as well as 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
In this episode of Elvis: Up Close, we’re featuring the Gold Lamé Jacket Elvis wore during his March 25, 1961, benefit concert at Pearl Harbor, along with the Award of Honor presented to him by the Pacific War Memorial Commission in recognition of his contributions to the USS Arizona Memorial project.
The historic concert raised more than $65,000 for the USS Arizona Memorial project and marked the final time Elvis wore the famous jacket on stage.
Both artifacts are now featured in the limited-time The American Spirit of Elvis Presley display in the Racquetball Building at Graceland, honoring America’s 250th anniversary.
