“They can actually subpoena people to come in to actually testify before Congress.”
The “real power” in this vote is that Congress can compel "first-hand" testimony, says Republican congressman Cory Mills.

Busy time for The Spectator’s US team. We had a party in the office in New York on Tuesday night and we’ve just sent off the latest edition to press in London…
"We are engulfed in a debate which suggests that Israel is uniquely evil... I'm afraid that the UK government has been complicit in that."
Today’s Manchester synagogue attack is a result of the media and government "fuelling an obsessive focus on Israel," says @LordWalney.
It's here:
Welcome to the inaugural episode The State of It, the new politics podcast from The Times and The Sunday Times
We promise to put you inside the room where it happens, giving you insight, scoops and gossip on what's really going on in the corridors or power
With my brilliant colleagues @cazjwheeler@patrickkmaguire@Gabriel_Pogrund
This week:
* Is it terminal for Keir Starmer? Growing Cabinet fears about May wipeout despite a relatively good conference for the prime minister
* If not Starmer then who? Shabana Mahmood, Wes Streeting and others all being talked up. Mahmood confessed to her own leadership aspirations
* Some Cabinet ministers think Keir Starmer's decision to accuse Nigel Farage of racism over migration policies is a mistake that will alienate voters and provide him with a huge platform
* Starmer will now throw everything he has at stopping illegal migration. Expect frenetic activity to get migrants out of hotels on every front. They need tangible results by May if they are to have any hope of stemming potential losses
* Starmer's plans for digital ID cards have split the Cabinet. Some fear it will drive voters to the Lib Dems and the Greens. They say it's a fantasy that will never happen. But Starmer has made a choice
* How much does conference actually matter? This Friday there is a far more significant moment when the OBR will hand the Treasury the first of its official forecasts. They will determine the scale of the tax rises to come, which look like they are going to be big
* There are mounting tensions between the OBR and the government. The timing of the OBR's decision to downgrade productivity forecasts - a reflection of 10 years of lower than expected growth - has infuriated ministers
* Rachel Reeves is now trying to convince the OBR to cost her growth policies. History suggests it is unlikely to do so

"The number one killer of free speech right now is the president."
The "chill around free speech" is not caused by the "radical left", says author and professor Scott Galloway.
“It’s our friend that’s dead, shot in the throat, while doing what we’re supposed to do as Americans.”
When something bad happens in the US, Conservatives get blamed, but the left has also used “violent rhetoric,” says CNN conservative commentator @ScottJenningsKY.
Breaking .. I am hearing MPs have been told the plan is that tomorrow's hustings for Labour Deputy Leader will be online, rather than in front of the PLP. Lots of anger brewing ....
I'll be running the Southport Defib Dash this month to raise money for The Southport Saviours Foundation to install more defibrillators across Southport.

@TimesRadio credit to you and @kaitborsay for your coverage of Southport. A deeply touching and thoughtful reflection on an awful day and days that followed it. As a father to girls who were themselves at a similar class that day it has moved me again to tears.
🔊616,000 people are listening to @TimesRadio every week according to the latest #RAJAR figures.
