Flooding of roads , railway lines and private homes is clearly going to need priority action by the local authorities and emergency services today but it is clear to me that the rewetting of bogs by @BnMIreland in parts of the midlands has led to NEW flooding of hundreds of acres of Private land nearby for the first time . Farmers have sent me photographic evidence of land that was never flooded before in areas where Bord na Móna has turned off pumps - this behaviour CANNOT be allowed to continue as it threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of farmers ; We warned a year ago this was a real possibility if the @EU_Commission Nature Restoration bill was not properly analysed at local level before it was introduced - and I personally told Bord na Móna management this would happen if the drains around bogs were not cleaned out and water allowed to run away properly . Now thousands of euros in damage is being caused and, worse still, small farmers will be put out of business if they can’t access their own land because a bog next door is flooded over. We obviously know the rainfall of the last 48 hrs has been exceptional but this is land that has NEVER flooded before - The time for talking about this is over : we will move to another level this week with @BnMIreland
