What else about @sssmirnov case is that there is a separate division in Russian "Center for Prevention Extremism" called division "I" which stands for "Informational counterwork". So they monitor internet publications, waste a ton of printer paper, and this results in arrests.

A few people have asked me for more technical details about what U.S. company @Sandvine is doing in Belarus to help the country censor the internet. So here's a thread with some new insights on that:

Collateral damage doesn't work anymore. If your obfuscated protocol mimics TLS, it wouldn't work in case of TLS blocking (Belarus). Adversary doesn't really accountable for collateral damage, so why should they care.

There is no reliable technical way to block a website (although there is market based on a lie there is). But there is always a way for a shutdown, and authoritarian regimes can take collateral damage.
