One of the teaching innovations Xolani Mayana introduced at Kuyasa Combined is student journaling. He picked it up from his mentor and PhD supervisor, Ken Ngcoza, Professor Emeritus of Education at Rhodes University.

Professor Lubke is a pioneer in environmental impact assessment, focusing on the Eastern Cape's ecological landscape. His applied research has involved consulting for government departments, private developers, and local authorities on issues like veld burning, dune management, and new development impacts. His interests include coastal dune systems, grassland, savanna, and thicket plant community studies.
In 1989, he co-founded Coastal and Environmental Services. Prof Lubke significantly influenced the development of Environmental Science at Rhodes University. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Land Rehabilitation Society of Southern Africa in 2019.
Prof Lubke authored "A Field Guide to the Eastern Cape Coast," awarded the Cape Times Centenary Medal for Conservation, and co-authored "The Guide to the Natural and Cultural History of Grahamstown/Makhanda." Post-retirement, he has taught at Rhodes University and published in international journals. He also contributed to high school biology textbooks, underscoring his commitment to education and environmental science.
