Cutting seeds open will help them sprout faster...

Seeds aren't dead. Inside every one is a living plant embryo, waiting for a trigger to bring it out of a dormant state

That normally happens via the natural process of germination. First, imbibition, or water absorption through the outer coat. This activates dormant metabolic processes and begins oxygen consumption and respiration...

Some seeds germinate fast, others...not so much. Luffa gourds for example can take 15+ days to sprout...so I started cutting them open to speed it up

When I say cutting open, I really mean a tiny chunk of the seed snipped off. What this does is decrease time for water to penetrate the thick seed hull, allowing for that crucial first step of imbibition to happen faster

This tiny change takes a seed like luffa from 15 day germination time to 3 day - a huge increase if you're on a timeline like most of us gardeners

Not something you'd do with every seed, but large ones with thick seed hulls...give it a try
