"The president has an unconventional approach to foreign policy," @AnthonyRuggiero says. "I think that's the most diplomatic way to put it, and his relationship with Kim Jong Un is something that he cultivated in the first term."

Trump, who said in 2018 that he and Kim "fell in love," has been pushing for a meeting with the authoritarian leader. The United States hasn't met with North Korea since Trump's first term.

A meeting with North Korea would be "a first step" for diplomatic engagement, the Mansfield Foundation's Bruce Klingner says, as President Donald Trump pushes for a meeting with Kim Jong Un.

"The U.S. has not had a bilateral meeting or really any engagement whatsoever since October 2019, the last bilateral meetings, which the North Koreans described as 'sickening,"' he told Compass Points host @nickschifrin.

U.S. negotiators "have said we are willing to meet anywhere, anytime about anything with no conditions, and yet North Korea has rejected that," he later added. "So just getting a meeting would not necessarily be a success, but it'd be a first step, sort of a normal first step of diplomatic engagement."

In her latest sciolistic letter to me, @SenWarren made it clear that she knows even less about foreign exchange markets than she does about banking.

What is equally shocking, but not surprising: not a single member of the media mob has a rudimentary-enough level of financial market literacy to spot her remedial error.

To reiterate: under @POTUS, the United States delivers for America’s trusted partners.

For a fuller explanation, I recommend Senator Warren take any entry level course in international finance for her and her staff, or I can personally give her a tutorial on Foreign Exchange for Dummies. Although I am not holding my breath, I hope her next letter will demonstrate that she has learned the difference between a currency purchase and a swap or a loan.

Don’t be fooled here. Today’s Treasury action isn’t TACO. But I can understand why many may think it is. This is the problem with how we colloquially refer to sanctions actions. When the U.S. moved in 2012 to revoke China’s Bank of Kunlun’s access to the U.S. financial system because of its dealings with Iran, it was then and has since been referred to as a “sanction” on Bank of Kunlun despite the fact that Bank of Kunlun isn’t on the SDN list.

Australia’s recently adopted News Bargaining Incentive is a discriminatory tax aimed squarely at leading American technology companies. The scheme is no way for a close ally to treat U.S. businesses, especially as technology leadership becomes increasingly important to American economic and national security. @POTUS @realdonaldtrump has made clear that foreign governments cannot use American companies as for piggy banks. @USTradeRep will no doubt launch a Section 301 investigation into this matter shortly.

I shared my thoughts with @_phillipsmorgan in @FoxNews on the President Trump-Kim Jong Un relationship and the reduced U.S.-ROK exercises. I discussed the role of sanctions and sanctions relief in a future Trump-Kim summit and why it is not surprising that Trump reduced the military exercises. There is a pathway to a deal with North Korea but both sides are in different positions than in the first Trump term.
