Class 2A State Baseball Championship Series
Ariton Sweeps Games 2 and 3 to claim
Its third 2A State Title in the Last 4 Years
JACKSONVILLE β Ariton High School bounced back from Mondayβs first-game 4-0 loss to Mars Hill Bible in the AHSAA Class 2A State Baseball Championship Series with a sweep in Tuesdayβs games two and three at Jacksonville Stateβs Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
The Purple Cats kept their playoff hopes alive winning Tuesday morning and then captured the schoolβs third state championship in the last four years with a clutch 5-2 win the game 3 Tuesday afternoon.
Ariton (32-8), coached by Bob Pickett, took an early 2-1 lead after two innings before the Mars Hill Bible (31-12), coached by Josh Willingham, rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh inning, however, the Ariton bats came alive collecting four hits to plate three runs.
Brodie Lowery opened the rally with a lead-off single to center field. Easton Kilpatrick followed with another single up the middle. Addison Senn drove in in Lowery with a fielderβs choice. Bryson Rhett delivered a one-out single to right field to plate Kilpatrick, and Asa Thompson slashed a single to the side to plate Senn.
Winning pitcher Ridge Hicks, a freshman, hurled six strong innings allowing six hits, two runs and striking out four to get the win. Sophomore shortstop Pierce Gill moved to the mound to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning allowing one hit and striking out two to notch the state-championship winning save.
βHicks is just a ninth grader, but he let me know he would be ready to pitch the third game,β said Pickett. βAnd he was ready.β Pickett said his team, which played only one of the five playoff series at home, was prepared to play on the road due to a very challenging schedule.
βThey were all in bed last night by 9:30 because they knew why we were here,β said Pickett, who also praised Mars Hill Bibleβs effort. βThis is third championship in the four years, and I can tell you Coach Willinghamβs team was well prepared β the best weβve had to face during this time.β
Pickett also lauded the play of Lowery, had the best defensive play of the series to snuff out a Panthers rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Ariton clinging to a 2-1 lead, Mars Hill Bible catcher Carter Hamm drilled single to reach safely. Tristan McCulley was inserted as a pinch runner. The next batter, Christian OβRear, slammed a liner in the hole at second base but Lowery somehow made the catch. He then turned and fired to first to get runner out to complete the double play.
βThat was very big,β said Pickett. βVery big.β
Willingham, who spent 11 seasons in the major league, agreed. βTheir player made a great play. If you play baseball long enough you know some days the plays just donβt go your way. Today was one of those days.β
The Panthers battled back, however, one inning later when Luke Fowler doubled down the line over the third-base bag scoring Bryce Graham from third to tie the game at 2-2. Hicks closed the rally getting a strikeout to end the inning for Ariton.
Junior Addison Senn, who pitched a two-hitter striking out 13 in game two earlier in the day, had one hit and two key RBIs for Ariton in game three and was named the Class 2A Series MVP. Lowery had two hits, Gill slugged a triple and had one RBI, third baseman Conner Davidson collected three hits, and Bryson Rhett had an RBI single for the Purple Cats.
Mars Hill third baseman Cody Willis had a double and two singles in game three, and Fowler finished with his RBI double.
The Panthers opened Tuesdayβs first game with a single run in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 1-0 lead. Ariton posted three runs in the top of the third and added three in the sixth inning to seal the win with second baseman Brodie Lowery drilling a base hit to right field to plate two runs. Easton Kilpatrick also had one hit and two RBIs for Ariton, and right fielder Hayes Hammock had two hits.
Brooks Campbell had a double and Cody Willis had a single for the Panthers, coached by Josh Willingham. Campbell pitched five innings allowing six hits, all six runs and struck out three to get the loss. Reliever Cole Agee pitched the final two innings for Mars Hill allowing one hit and striking out 1.
The Class 3A and Class 4A State Baseball Championship Series both got started Tuesday with game 1 in each series played at Oxfordβs Choccolocco Park
