Pope says, "Redemption is simple. Great hermit John of Beverley lives in a forest in England. Go and see him. He should know how to save your soul." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But holy father... I am John of Beverley.”
@Sturgeons_Law To your point however, I think that part of the problem is the fact that the movie seems to be set in mid-19th century, which can’t really mesh with the pre-1800 class dynamics of the novel
@Sturgeons_Law You’re right that she doesn’t hint at plantation investments, which were not universal of course, but my point was more that this is not an implausible idea, and that the Frankensteins are basically as close to these French or British aristocrats as you could get in Geneva
@Sturgeons_Law Whether through trade – as with his mother’s family –, banking, manufacturing (of printed cottons, for example), or even just straight up owning plantations, Swiss and Genevan economic elites were deeply involved with the triangle trade and slavery!
@Sturgeons_Law With the caveat that I have not seen GDT’s yet: Victor’s family being "counsellors and syndics" implies that they’re patrician aristocrats involved in running the state, not mere civil servants – they would have been rich and that fortune would have been invested somewhere…
@JulotduLac J’espère que le septième est exclusivement filmé comme le bouquin, juste le cardinal qui raconte tout à son entourage à la première personne.
@LeaCline12 @BLMedieval 20 sols, so essentially 20 shillings, but AFAIK there was no such coinage in England at the time, so unless they used continental coins, it might have been paid as 240 pennies?
@oldenoughtosay If you don’t mind removing the rind (probably the porkiest bit anyway), this Smitten Kitchen pulled pork is very easy and very good https://t.co/Dvx2DcsGgH if you have access to good dried chilies, Samin Nosrat’s braise is great too https://t.co/b5i8YdjxkP
