@archaeojake @SEACArchaeology Looking forward to your paper! I’m in yo symposium too, talking about the impossibilities of balancing community interests/values and our decisions as political and social action. For me, intending to use whatever influence/expertise I have to build a more equitable archeology.
@KUHoopes @LiviHeebsh @paleoethnobot @fiftysitesbook@roaminghawkeye There are many Tribes with cultural connections to Plum Bayou. We have no direct affiliation, but we had everyone at the tables Whose language would you have us choose? Without alienating one Tribe over another? It isn’t a perfect solution but it is one we came up with together.
@KUHoopes @LiviHeebsh @paleoethnobot @fiftysitesbook@roaminghawkeye I’m done here, I just wanted to make doubly and triply clear on here that the work was put in by all involved. Plum Bayou was the name we all (descendant groups included) agreed upon as the best solution. For many reasons.
@KUHoopes @LiviHeebsh @paleoethnobot @fiftysitesbook I think @roaminghawkeye already told you what they said and thought, as she was involved in those meetings.
Your tweet does imply that we didn’t contact the Tribes and reads as such.
@KUHoopes @LiviHeebsh @paleoethnobot @fiftysitesbook We did contact them. If you read the attached article (which I wrote), we worked with descendant groups to make this decision, including BUT NOT LIMITED TO limited to Quapaw Nation, Chickasaw Nation, and Mississippi Choctaw. Know what you’re talking about before you speak.
Plum Bayou Mounds Archeological State Park has officially been renamed! Dr. Ford has written up a history of the park, the name changes that the site has gone through, and how it became a state park to begin with. You can read her article here: https://t.co/Hmo2VxJxuU
I think archaeology needs to have a deep conversation about abusive or even “selective” advisors. If you’re a tenured professor and you are overworking or privileging some students over your others, you’re a problem. All your students matter and deserve your support. Do better.
Join us and @OKPAN next Wednesday, March 16th, for the next entry in the Tribal Histories Series featuring the Shawnee Tribe Cultural and Historical Preservation Committee. Register here: https://t.co/Bef2RwmMHV and check out links to past entries on our website!
Generalized Anxiety is super fun. It’ll tell me after I’ve had a good discussion with colleagues on important issues that, “hey you’re like…real annoying and should probably retreat a bit from all conversations for a bit to not seem overly critical/opinionated”.

@sarah_trabert Vet prescribed that for Milo for my move to Arkansas and boy it worked wonders. Kept the little guy calm (or just tired as hell I couldn’t tell) while we traveled.
We are so excited that we are now co-sponsoring the Tribal Histories Series with @OKPublicArch. The Tribal History Series webinars are held biweekly, each featuring a representative(s) from a different Tribal Nation. You can register at this link: https://t.co/VrVQVIvlcj
Not down for this trend of conferences ignoring how the pandemic is like....worse now than it was last fall. Social distancing is cool, but like most of us have a far piece to travel to get to your venue. I'll write some articles instead of presenting this year, I think.
If you've been following along with our OKPAN Tribal Histories webinars, you'll be excited to hear we've begun sharing recordings of events in this series! Check out our YouTube channel (https://t.co/Hfph3Z3by5) for two recent presentations, and keep an eye out for more.
Instead maintain transparent relationships, continued collaborations and partnerships. Make the Tribes your equals and colleagues. Trust them and listen to them. Quit with the savior complex stuff. Don't boast.
Archaeologists: please stop saying things like your small excavation helped undo even a small part of the CENTURIES of oppression that occurred for Native peoples. I can promise you it didn’t.
