Did you know the Boers (White descendants of Dutch) were not indigenous to South Africa? They were invaders who often attempted to terrorize the original inhabitants of Southern Africa, the Basotho, but the Kingdom of Lesotho resisted, a decision that proved wise considering the potential outcomes under white settler control.

In 1833, French missionaries advised King Moshoeshoe to seek British protection against Dutch encroachment. This was an attempt to make Lesotho a British protectorate, with the British often reminding Black aboriginal groups of their power to gain allegiance. From 1867 to 1868, Boers from the Orange Free State occupied much of Moshoeshoe's land. Historically, what is now the Free State of South Africa was originally part of Lesotho before being taken by white settlers, which explains why Lesotho is now surrounded within South Africa.
