the "not all men" discourse is not informed by any genuine social intellect, but by fear of society losing its hegemony over women and their liberties.
i fail to understand how women have to constantly defend "all men". i mean society does it on a daily basis. it's all men when it asks women to watch their clothes or who they talk to or where they go. it's all men when society gets to control women's liberties.
The Kolkata rape&murder is not a novel case, but a selective outrage. Rapes in India aren't just subjugation of women, but of caste, class and religion, as well. It is a tragic reality that outrages in India take completely different routes...
when the intersectionalities of patriarchy, religion, casteism, and/or social class (now inclusive of presumed political identities) come into play. The subjugation of the marginalised and the subsequent power struggle is a complex narrative in India.
Yes, we know it's not all men. Thank you for stating the obvious. However, knowing something intellectually is very different from feeling it emotionally. 'All men' is not a generalization informed by hatred in its widest extent, but by trepidation.
We don't want your hollow apologies, and we sure as hell don't want advice from people who consider women as secondary citizens. Give us reforms. Do the difficult. Do something worthwhile with all the power the people have entrusted you with.
Freedom was won 77 years ago when we painted our cages tricolour. Upon liberation, we entered a state of contradictions. While I offer deep reverence to this nation&its abstract ideals, I am hesitant to celebrate its people. I ask with much curiosity: where are we headed exactly?
A womans safety is the job of her govt, her administration, her institutions, her faculty, her education systems, her authorities, her courts, her country to enforce and systemically guarantee. It should have nothing to do with her hours, wardrobe or anything else. Itโs OUR job.
A diasporic Bangladeshi Muslim human rights activist whose bio says he worked w Amnesty International claims that Bdeshi minorities have oppressed โthe peopleโ to explain the violence against them. Sadly some victim-blaming majoritarians hide as human rights activists in the west
From #BhanwariDevi to #RGKarmedical rape&murder case, a timeline of over 30 years, tell me exactly how much has the needle really moved?
Stand in solidarity with doctors. Stand in solidarity with women. Stand in solidarity with your own humanity.
I can't even begin to count how often I have heard insular claims on how women's equality is achieved. How often it is in the common discourse to victim shame, or to generally desire untethered domination over women.
