In 1981, under the Left front CM Late Jyoti Basu, English was banned in the Primary School level in Govt. Schools, while they themselves sent their own Children to English medium school.

Generations lost out in the race for proper employment compared to their counterparts who studied in Pvt. Schools, where English was still being taught.

When they realised it was hampering Technical Education as well, the LF Govt. removed English from JEE, but later when they passed out Engineering, many companies who came for recruitment, raised lack of English skills as a reason for not recruiting.

A lot of today’s Bengali versus English medium acrimony dates back to the Jyoti Basu-led Communist government’s language policy that banned teaching of English till class 5.
