INR to a global currency; a steady race started to yield results

RBI data shows exports invoiced in INR at ~₹3.27 lakh crore and imports at ~₹2.85 lakh crore in 2025-26. Import settlements jumped 41% YoY, with the SRVA network now active across 30+ countries. Nearly 5% of India’s trade is already moving in rupees.

The USD “Pegging-Up Premium”: An Intriguing Tug-of-War with AI Models

When you assert that your currency will strengthen meaningfully against the US dollar over time, most prominent AI models initially disagree. They counter with a host of reasons, starting with inflation differentials and the structural need for the dollar to remain strong as the world’s primary reserve currency.
Once you show that your country’s inflation is significantly lower than America’s, the model shifts ground. It now stresses industrial production, global value chains, and the special responsibilities that come with issuing a reserve currency — often invoking various economic and mathematical frameworks to support its position.
You push back by pointing out how production and supply chains are now highly distributed across the globe. The AI then doubles down on the unique role of reserve-currency issuers and the theoretical case for a stronger dollar.
But if you persistently and logically press the question — specifically raising the possibility of an implicit “pegging up” or structural premium — the model eventually concedes. To your surprise, it acknowledges that economists have indeed discussed a persistent 15–20% premium embedded in the USD’s value due to its reserve-currency status.
At that point, if you ask the AI to hypothetically strip away or reduce this premium and re-evaluate your original claim, its answer often changes. It will typically outline a plausible timeframe over which your currency could strengthen against the dollar.
I cross-checked this with one of my economist friends and he confirmed that for long many economists have been suspecting USD Pegging-up
This little experiment leaves economists with some interesting questions: Does such a structural premium truly exist? If so, do the benefits of this “exorbitant privilege” reach all countries that hold the dollar in reserve? And quietly in the background, one wonders whether the teams fine-tuning these models might train future versions to respond differently to this kind of persistent, evidence-based probing. 😄

The establishment of a dedicated Department for the Welfare of Elderly Persons by the newly elected Government of Keralam is definitely a need of the hour. Keralam is ageing faster than the rest of India, with the elderly (60+) population already around 18-20% in 2026 and projected to reach nearly 23% by 2036. Major real-world challenges include large-scale youth migration leaving elders isolated, rising incidence of chronic diseases, dementia and depression, financial dependence on modest pensions, caregiver burnout, elder abuse, and poor accessibility in public spaces and services.

That said, care must be taken to avoid duplication of efforts and wasteful expenditure. The state already has a fully functional Vayojana Commission, constituted under the Kerala State Elderly Commission Act, 2025 (Act 5 of 2025). A careful review of this Act is therefore essential to clearly define and harmonise the roles of the new Department and the Commission, ensuring synergy rather than overlap.

Like most legislation that establishes commissions, this Act vests considerable authority — including quasi-judicial and punitive powers — from the very outset. The review should reorient the Commission to function as a lifelong learner and researcher in the field of elderly welfare. It should become a dynamic institution with superb coordination capabilities, serving as an expert advisory body to the Department on policy formulation as well as a modern, effective implementing and monitoring agency.

As the Chief Minister hinted during the press conference, an in-depth study to be completed within two months to identify the most implementable best practices would be highly valuable. This study should also examine global frameworks such as the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030), led by the World Health Organization and its partners.

In my strong conviction, this important initiative will become truly sustainable only through robust decentralised implementation via Local Self-Government Institutions. However, this will demand significant and focused capacity building at the panchayat and municipal levels.

Wishing the new Department, the Vayojana Commission, and everyone involved all the very best!
