Artists check the math 💯

[Drew @Drewapicasso29]

Label offered us $400K for Joyner's publishing.

Everybody around us said take it. Manager friends, lawyers, even family.

I pulled the BMI statements. Ran the numbers myself. The math said we were leaving millions on the table.

We walked.

18 months later we closed $2.5M on the same rights.

That $400K "great deal" would've cost us $2.1 million.

Labels don't lowball you because they're evil. They lowball you because most artists never check the math.

Label offered Joyner a $400K publishing deal. Everyone said great deal, great deal, great deal. I ran the BMI numbers. Didn't make sense. We walked. Less than 2 years later we did $2.5M on the same rights. 'Great deal' is what people say when they want you to stop counting.

They give you a 16% royalty. They take a 20% distribution fee first. So a $100K marketing spend leaves you $13K. That $13K recoups against the $100K they spent. You're always in the red. By design. Own the math before you sign anything.

Every artist wants a manager.

Not every artist is ready to be managed.

A manager can open doors…
But they can’t want it more than you.

The biggest artists usually had the obsession BEFORE the opportunity came.

Artists & managers… what’s the biggest red flag on the other side?

[Drew @Drewapicasso29]

Unpopular opinion:

Most artists don’t need a record deal.

They need:

a content strategy
consistent releases
a real fanbase
financial discipline
a team that actually cares

A label should pour gas on a fire.

Not be the match that starts it.

The biggest lie artists are told:

“Just make good music and they’ll find you.”

No they won’t.

You’re not competing with bad music anymore. You’re competing with algorithms, attention spans, marketing budgets, and 100,000 songs uploaded every day.

Talent opens the door.
Strategy keeps you in the room.

Agree or disagree?

[Drew @Drewapicasso29]

The best artists in music know how to delegate. The label had a lawyer draft our contract. I hired that same lawyer to undo it. Inside a year: merch back, masters back, off the deal. Find the right people. Hire them. Watch what opens up.

The "Major Label" model is officially a legacy play.

The majors aren't "industry leaders" anymore. They are asset managers trying to maintain a dying status quo. While they’re busy trying to figure out how to tax your merch, we’re using AI driven workflows and streamlined tec...

The DistroKid $2B valuation and UMG's stake in Stationhead aren't just headlines—they're the 2026 blueprint.

Distribution is infrastructure, and engagement is being owned, not just rented. The 'superfan' is the new economy. 📈 #MusicBusiness #MusicTech #Stationhead

The Nettwerk MBO backed by Create Music Group is a signal. The independent label model isn't dying, it's just becoming more decentralized. The leverage is shifting back to the people who actually run the day-to-day. 💼 #MusicBusiness #IndependentLabels

[Drew @Drewapicasso29]

The music industry in 2026 is no longer about who has the biggest budget, it’s about who has the most efficient distribution and the cleanest data. The middleman is getting squeezed. Stay agile or get left behind. 😤 #MusicIndustry #MusicBusiness #IndependentArtist
