Stay out of the carriageway as horses move at speed and cannot be quickly stopped if something or someone steps into their way.

Thinking of visiting Appleby Horse Fair over the weekend? With thundery downpours and blustery wind forecast, make sure you wear appropriate footwear & wet weather clothing. If you're arriving by car, drive to the conditions & watch out for slow moving and horse drawn vehicles.
Following a safety inspection the decision has been taken to close the Holme Farm car park access bridge to vehicles for the duration of this year's fair. Alternative access to the car park is signposted, up from Appleby Grammar School, off the A66 westbound slipway road.
Many thanks to Westmorland and Furness Council's dedicated waste management and street cleaning teams who swing into action at the end of each day and again first thing in the morning to make sure Appleby and the surrounding towns and villages are clean and tidy.
The Sands road closure is now in place.
The Sands is likely to close around lunchtime daily, with the aim to reopen at around 6pm – please allow extra time for street cleaning thereafter.
Note - Access and egress for the duration of the closure is via the Station Road end.
The access bridge to Holme Farm car park is closed to allow for a safety inspection. Alternative access is now signposted off the B6542 (the westbound slipway road for the A66) above Appleby Grammar School.
