IS MY AI SHOWING?

It's become pretty easy to spot AI writing. Those of us who read and/or write a lot develop an eye for rhythm, construction. And, of course, there are the, um, load bearing tells everywhere.

But I think some of what is now suspected as AI writing may be unfairly tarred as such. I notice two types of problematic categories in my own writing.

Firstly, decades of litigation and legal drafting makes you generally write in a very precise way. You cover all options, you use different words, maybe at times more than others would have felt necessary. I look at some of my articles and passages in my books, and I wonder...does that look like AI?

The second category is some of these clearly AI rhythms. The well-known "It's not A, it's not B, but a type of C" setup is also a pretty good way of writing. Have a look and listen to Winston Churchill's writing and speeches (try the "we shall fight them on the beaches..." passage). It's effective stuff. If I have a single greatest influence on my own writing it would be Churchill.

AI did not create any new style of writing, a new cadence. It stole its clichés from our earlier work.

So, I'm going to run that risk, and keep on writing the way I have always written. It's not rebellious, it's not provocative, it's just how I write 😉
