What actually happened in Kyrgyzstan, #Bishkek? 🧵👇

More than 60,000 foreign students are currently studying in Kyrgyzstan, of which 15,000 Indians and 10,000 Pakistanis are in the majority. There are also a large number from Bangladesh and Egypt.

Thousands of foreign students are studying in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. On May 13, a dispute broke out between locals and a group of students at the Mustafa Cafe in Bishkek, which led to a scuffle outside the cafe. There are hostels near Mustafa Cafe, so dozens of students stay there. A group of local people clashed with Egyptian students, the news of which reached the local areas. There have been reports on social media that foreign students have assaulted local people.

After recording the statements of these local people by the police, legal action was assured and investigation was started. The police investigation was going on, but daily provocations about foreign students continued to be spread on social media, which enraged the local people. On May 17, when a proposal to hold a protest outside the foreign student hostels came up, about 300 people took part in it, but then a number of the protesters got angry and started attacking. Meanwhile, a false news spread on social media that foreign students killed a local person.

This increased the agitation and about 1000 natives arrived armed. Foreigners, including Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Egyptian students, were attacked in hostels and residential apartments. Pakistanis were particularly affected by these attacks. Students from other countries, including India, remained safe from these attacks, but the Indian Foreign Minister immediately demanded the govt of Kyrgyzstan to take measures to protect the students and the situation itself was monitored. A helpline number has also been set up for Indian students where they can inform about their well-being and situation at all times. The embassies of Bangladesh and Egypt were also seen active.

The most affected students were from Pakistan who were really the target of these attacks, but the @GovtofPakistan showed extreme carelessness. Only the Pakistani ambassador @hazaigham asked the students to stay inside the houses/hostels, but in spite of heavy rain and external threats, they were forced out and the belongings were thrown out.

The Kyrgyz govt has claimed that the situation is under control and has held talks with angry protesters to calm the situation.
