Today, the @aak_tpc, @aak_arch & @LandscapeArchKE , together with the Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC), visited the Kamukunji site as part of the ongoing Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme.

The visit highlighted the important role of local communities in shaping, sustaining and taking ownership of regenerated public spaces. Meaningful community engagement is vital to ensuring that these interventions respond to local needs and create inclusive, resilient spaces for all.

HOW CAN Engineers Board of Kenya @EngineersBoard not have a functioning board for over a year? What level of incompetency is this? Having a properly functioning board is the very least government needs to do for the young engineers. And as I have always said, retire all the wazees in EBK pronto. Give them good packages and let them go home. This sector today requires fresh undiluted perspective and ingenuity to progress it.

On 12th August 2026, AAK participated in the launch of Project Maathai by Zen Carbon, the Global South’s first industrial CO₂ injection deployment in a concrete plant. The Project is a six-month industrial pilot that targets the permanent mineralization of 15 tonnes of CO₂ per year, generation of data on production performance, operating requirements, carbon storage, and the measurement of CO₂ mineralized through the production process. The technology permanently stores CO₂ within concrete during the mixing process thereby reducing cement consumption, enabling the production of durable, low-carbon construction materials without compromising on their performance. The used CO₂ in the process is sequestered through Direct Air Capture by @OctaviaCarbon, one of Zen Carbon’s project partners.

The event was held at the Flamingo Concrete’s plant at Kasarani, Nairobi County, and demonstrated how captured CO₂ can be injected into concrete during production and permanently mineralized within the concrete matrix, hence turning CO₂ into a material input for construction. The deployment is designed to integrate into the plant’s existing production processes, allowing concrete to be produced within a normal commercial manufacturing environment. This is particularly relevant for achievement of our decarbonization milestones, especially at a time when our cities are rapidly urbanizing at a rate of 4.4% per annum, with the UN projections indicating that half of our population will be residing in urban areas by 2050. At the same time, the Global ABC projects that 70% of the buildings needed to house this population by 2050 are yet to be constructed.

The project also aims to demonstrate the tangible benefits to local communities where is it deployed as the reduced carbon concrete will be used in infrastructure upgrades at Kasarani Primary School and Police Station, demonstrating how industrial climate innovation connects with CSR initiatives in communities.
