@EPTB4@Sadlyknight@denimneverdies That's not really related to the lack or presence of heaven though.
It's hard to say someone who isn't a nihilist would be one if they didn't know of the concept of heaven.
They might have been, but it's not the norm at all, otherwise we'd be extinct
@EPTB4@Sadlyknight@denimneverdies That's only if you are already raised into this idea of heaven. Humanity thrived for a long time without this concept.
The technology of religion has been useful in some cases, to that I agree, but I think the negatives outweigh the positives.
@EPTB4@Sadlyknight@denimneverdies Yes, but even then, some chance answers for unanswerable questions can lead to unwanted outcomes.
The belief in heaven, for example, is unprovable. It also tells people that there is some other, better place and the suffering on earth is ephemeral, reducing revolutionary drive
@EPTB4@Sadlyknight@denimneverdies Of course people don't choose their religion, but I'm just explaining why leftists don't generally like religion.
Because it is irrational and introduces unnecessary "randomness/unpredictability" by allowing some unreasonable norms to creep in through the cracks.
@EPTB4@Sadlyknight@denimneverdies If it is unprovable, whether you are correct up to chance, which is a poor epistemology to have in a movement that wants a coherent and consistent move towards specific values.
Why be a socialist that has decided through some coinflips to be puritan and not just a socialist?
@EPTB4@Sadlyknight@denimneverdies Because it's false and introduces a source of (to that person) divine correctness that may align with bad things, in a way someone who doesn't believe in a source of pure truth wouldn't fall for this kind of arbitrary dogmatism.
@AlephO273690@LFRedfoot@balls0cxq2@NondescriptRed If by "decolonization of universal human rights" you mean the disapproval of foreign intervention with the pretense of establishing freedom, then I agree to that.
@AlephO273690@LFRedfoot@balls0cxq2@NondescriptRed Yeah I agree on that, but I think it doesn't speak to the truth of universal human rights.
Like, human freedom is good, but bad people use it as an excuse to do bad things.
Violations of human rights are bad, some measure of intervention can be good, though most have ill intent
@AlephO273690@LFRedfoot@balls0cxq2@NondescriptRed I'm broadly leftist but have been questioning some stuff I have previously taken for granted, to see if they hold water or if I was being too mob-mentality minded.
@AlephO273690@LFRedfoot@balls0cxq2@NondescriptRed Sorry for using this term again, but this still feels like buzzwords.
I don't need to understand the entire theory, just need an example of some aspect of universal human rights that carries this colonial dynamic.
@AShatlaa@nullcast357@NerdeenKiswani If you think "religion is regressive" is equivalent to "we should decolonize the middle east from muslim invaders", you should probably take a look at why you're conflating these very different things.
@ISDONALDTDEAD_@queerBengali Are you stupid or do you just not understand what freedom of choice means?
I am free to choose to not hire gay people or black people, is that not discriminatory because I freely chose it?
Free choice is a principle that can be used for many things, some of which are bad, duh
@Ali_lulu73@cj110106@Hezbolsonaro@g_abe2 "Being a fanatic football fan makes you prone to violence"
"Then explain why Stalin, who didn't like football, killed a lot of people???"
You did this earlier.
@Ali_lulu73@cj110106@Hezbolsonaro@g_abe2 If you understand how statistics work, why did you previously argue "if being X makes you bad, why doesn't being (Not X) doesn't make you inherently good?"
A 5th grader could identify that 'being religious tends to lead to reactionarism' doesn't entail 'no atheists are react..."
