Wildcard Wednesday 🃏👹🐷
You wake up in a room that smells like Hot Cheetos and betrayal. A CRT TV flickers on. A voice says:
“To escape, you must relive one.”
1. Opening MySpace and realizing your best friend quietly dropped you from their Top 8
2. Clicking “Linkin Park – In the End.mp3” on LimeWire and giving your family computer a catastrophic virus.
3. Getting annihilated in the ankle by a Razor scooter. Barefoot. In front of your crush
Choose wisely.
The dial-up tone is getting louder.

The Spiral held Verdant gently, like a careful hand around something fragile yet essential. It neither squeezed nor pulled—it simply waited.
Verdant opened his eyes slowly, breath steadying. He remained at the Spiral's core, mirrors reflecting every choice he'd made, every path he'd fled, and every wound he'd inflicted or ignored. Across from him stood his double, no longer mocking or angry, just quietly observing.
“Why?” Verdant finally asked, voice raw and stripped of defenses. “Why did the city burn?”
His double regarded him evenly, eyes reflecting phantom flames. "You know why. You set it in motion."
Verdant shook his head, denial fading. “I don’t—I don’t clearly remember.”
His double stepped aside. One of the mirrors expanded into a living memory, stretching outward.
The scene shifted to a room bathed in dim, pulsing blue-green neon—a familiar laboratory humming with technology. The scientist stood at a console, younger, her expression tense but determined. Beside her was Verdant’s younger self, driven by purpose and fury, urgently manipulating holographic DNA strands.
"You were trying to save the city," the double said softly, standing beside Verdant. "You believed you'd found the cure to the Syndicate's corrupted genetics—strains engineered to enslave rather than heal. You thought the Primal Bloom was the key."
Verdant nodded slowly, memories crystallizing painfully clear.
Suddenly, the scene turned chaotic, alarms screaming as Syndicate drones swarmed the perimeter, breaking glass, forcing entry. The younger Verdant frantically uploaded data, shouting to the Archivist: "They can't get this. It’s not ready!"
"The Syndicate was always one step ahead," his double continued quietly. "They tried to seize control. You panicked."
The memory shifted again—Verdant watched his younger self shaking, releasing a hastily modified Primal Bloom variant into the city’s ventilation system, desperate to keep it out of Syndicate hands.
"Your intentions were good," his double murmured, "but fear cost lives."
The city erupted into chaos. Civilians panicked as unstable genetic reactions triggered widespread disorder. Flames consumed buildings as drones dropped incendiaries, attempting to scorch the truth from existence. Screams rose—a sound Verdant had buried deeply. People fled, the air thick with smoke and terror.
Verdant stepped back, breath catching painfully. "I… I caused this?"
"You were careless—idealistic, naive—but yes," the double replied firmly. "This was your work, your failure."
More memories surged forward: the girl with paint-stained hands running through flames, terrified eyes pleading as Verdant’s younger self abandoned her; the old man kneeling beside his shattered data-slate, Verdant turning away in shame; the scientist, betrayed and abandoned, watching him vanish into darkness.
"Why show me this?" Verdant asked, voice heavy with grief. "To break me again?"
"No," the double replied firmly. "Because you can't rebuild from lies. You must clearly see who you were and what you've done before choosing who you'll become."
Verdant turned toward his double, grief etched deeply into his expression. “But you didn’t forget.”
The double shook his head slowly. “No. I’m the part of you that stayed behind, that held onto every consequence, every scream, every lost life. You ran forward—I stayed behind in the ashes.”
“Why confront me now?” Verdant asked, voice thick with emotion. “Why all of this?”
“Because the Spiral isn’t punishment,” the double replied gently, stepping closer. “It’s integration. You can't heal by cutting away parts of yourself. You heal by bringing them home.”
Understanding dawned in Verdant’s eyes. He reached out slowly. “You're not my enemy. You're what I've needed all along.”
