The name Jesus is an English transliteration of Yeshua (ישוע), a shortened form of Yehoshua (יהושע), the same name as the biblical Joshua, roughly meaning “Yahweh is salvation” or “the Lord saves”. Jesus was not used until roughly the 1630s.
