The weathered version had soul. The restoration is period-accurate and museum-polished w/c fits NMP’s Important Cultural Property mandate, but loses what locals loved. Whatever happened to “the less you touch, the better”?
@_TineAlvarez thank you. though ive never been there im aware of Zamboanga as southern trading hub in the PH, these colonial influences create landmarks that aid navigation and city character. ❤️
In architecture, this kind of corner treatment appears in a lot of trading cities from the early 1900s like Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, even old Manila commercial buildings. Corner becomes almost like a small urban monument, even though it’s just a shop or office building.
Old shophouses with the ornate, curved gables and peeling paint, classic examples of early-to-mid 20th-century Bangkok architecture. ❤️
They've been standing there through the transition from fish market (late 1800s-mid-1900s) to flower central in the 1950s-70s.

During the period when the United States governed the Philippines from 1899 to 1946, the definition of what counted as a “U.S. university” briefly extended beyond the North American mainland. This created an unusual situation where institutions in U.S.-controlled territories could be considered within the same national framework as those in the continental United States.
Within that context, Harvard University, established in 1636 and long regarded as the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, was technically no longer the oldest under U.S. jurisdiction. That distinction shifted to the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, which had been founded in 1611 during the Spanish colonial era and predated Harvard by 25 years.
However, this “loss” of status depends entirely on how one defines the United States and its institutions. Harvard remained the oldest university within the mainland United States, while the University of Santo Tomas was part of a different historical and cultural system that only fell under American control during the Philippine-American period. Once the Philippines gained independence in 1946, Harvard resumed its uncontested position as the oldest university in the United States.

The Bare family is upholding a multi-generational covenant with the land that built this country. That kind of conviction of choosing legacy and purpose over a windfall is exactly what “heritage” looks like when it’s actually practiced instead of just romanticized. Respect.
🚨BREAKING: Kentucky family rejects a $26 million offer to turn their farmland into a data center, roughly 10x the area’s going rate.
“If it’s my way, I’ll stay and hold and feed a nation. 26 million doesn’t mean anything.”
Santa Cruz Church, established in 1603 as one of Manila's oldest, features a distinctive dome-topped tower that survived wars and earthquakes, the enduring colonial architecture in the Philippines. (colonial-era street life with vendors and a horse-drawn cart is ❤️)
A 2000-year-old Roman water channel that still flows today. This incredible underground aqueduct is hidden right inside the Smyrna Agora in Izmir, Türkiye.
Tailor bird, local name ‘sastre’. a non-human example of “place-based architecture”
wherein design emerges from intimate ecological knowledge rather than industrial production.
