The Ministry of Foreign Affairs finally released this statement regarding the Global Centre on Adaptation’s immunity deal.
But once again, they’ve refused to answer the most basic questions.

Why does a climate organization that deals directly with our land, agriculture, and environmental data need immunity???
Why can’t they be sued?
Why should an NGO registered in the Netherlands be allowed to operate above Kenyan law?
And most importantly why will the Ministry of Environment itself be housed inside the offices of this foreign NGO?

How does that even make sense?
How can the regulator be a tenant of the very organization it’s supposed to oversee?

Instead of transparency, what we’re getting is arrogance….
After raising these questions, I received an email from GCA’s PR team ,not to clarify, not to answer, but to warn me.
Here’s what they wrote, word for word:

“The GCA is immensely proud of its work in Kenya, which directly benefits communities most affected by climate change. We believe that by ensuring the accuracy of your reporting, GCA can mutually serve the public interest.

Please be aware that the GCA is within its right to take further actions, in accordance with Kenyan law, to address the reputational harm caused to the organization and its dedicated employees. We therefore respectfully request your cooperation in this matter.”

So let me get this straight ,they can sue people, but no one can sue them?
They can threaten people with legal action, but remain legally untouchable themselves?
What kind of justice is that?
What kind of government signs a deal that gives a foreign NGO the power to drag its own citizens to court, while shielding that same NGO from any form of accountability?

If the Ministry thinks this statement will silence the conversation, they’re wrong.
We’re just getting started.
Because immunity does not mean impunity.
And Kenya belongs to Kenyans ,not to organizations hiding behind immunity clauses and foreign legal shields!!!
