TELECOM TOWERS
Originally Ministry of Post, Telegraph & Telephone Towers
Riyadh, Al Sulaimaniyah | 1982
Built as the headquarters of the Ministry of Post, Telegraph and Telephone, the Telecom Towers feature concrete sun breakers and a three-story arcade with triangular arches inspired by Najdi architecture.
The towers once housed the Kingdom’s main telephone control center. During the 1980s and 90s, Canadian engineers from Bell Canada worked here and knew the complex as “Abraj Al-Sahra”, the Desert Towers.
One unusual detail remains part of its history: there was no 13th floor. Naif Al-Eissa, who worked in the building until 1997, recalled that the elevators went directly from the 12th to the 14th floor.
