It can be incredibly fun bringing up a character they mentioned previously, or running an encounter to parallel that impromptu story they told.

Not only does it make the world feel lived in, but it also shows the players they are just as much a part of the gameworld as you are.

I listen and ask myself 'How can I add to this?'

Often your players will give you ideas while they talk without realizing it. I take mental notes of the things they talk about, and why they are talking about it.
