With the PGA at Aronimink, there’s lots of talk about Donald Ross flying around, and it got me wondering: which of his courses is your favorite?
He designed around 400, with widely varying degrees of time and effort, so there’s lots to choose from.
Here are 8 of mine:
Essex County Club | Inverness Club

Seminole Golf Club | Pinehurst No. 2

Donald Ross called Aronimink his masterpiece in 1928. Bold turtleback greens, strategic bunkers, pure drama. This year it hosts the PGA Championship. You can play that same Ross magic right now on Holes 9 & 15 at The Architects Golf Club. Who’s ready for a true Golden Age test?
Tribute Day: George C. Thomas (1873-1932) ⛳

Hole 11 bunker restoration — pure William Flynn. Rare cluster of 11 bunkers on this dogleg-right par 5. Flynn: bunkers “present a problem or a mode of play.” Safe lay-up left… or go for the gusto & carry the whole cluster? Flynn drama revived. Distinction By Design. ⛳

Next up on the men’s major schedule: Aronimink Golf Club
Donald Ross’s suburban Philadelphia showpiece should prove to be a compelling test for the 2026 @PGAChampionship. Upon returning two decades after he created Aronimink in 1928, Donald Ross declared, “I intended to make this my masterpiece, but not until today did I realize that I built better than I knew.” High praise from the man many consider history’s finest architect. In 2018, Hanse Golf Design concluded work that restored the masterpiece. The PGA awaits in May.
Is there anyone in golf history as underrated as Walter Travis?
As a golfer, despite not hitting a shot until he was almost 35 years old, the “Old Man” won 3 U.S. Amateurs and a British Amateur, which sparked enormous interest in the game.
And as a golf course architect, Travis gave us some of the very best in golden age design. Seen here: Garden City Golf Club, Country Club of Scranton, Ekwanok Country Club and Hollywood Golf Club.

70 Years of Great Design Styles (1885-1955): Old Tom Morris (1894)
In 1894, Old Tom Morris — already a living legend at 73 — carved the final nine holes at Lahinch in Ireland.
That same spirit of adventure and honest links golf lives on at The Architects.
Hole 1 welcomes you with a straight, strategic par-5, framed by side bunkers, a classic stone wall hazard Old Tom himself would have loved, and a beautifully perched green offering sweeping views.
