I switched my desktop to a linux distro OS.
During installation, the BIOS were changed automatically to "fast boot" and either the grub version or a kernel was not loading properly.
My machine was stuck in a boot loop with no way to access bios to change the boot order.
Solution was to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard to reset BIOS which automatically disabled "fast boot."
After resetting the BIOS and disabling fast boot, then struggling a bit with UEFI and secure boot, I finally got the linux distro installed and booting properly.
This was all necessary because I'm tired of having to use undoubtedly corrupt KMS activation software for Windows. Also, my CPU cores were all reaching 100C with fans on high with very little of the CPU, memory, or disk being utilized.
I actually thought I'd have to remove the CPU, clean it, and reapply thermal paste- which I was not looking forward to doing. There are thousands of tiny pins connecting the CPU to the motherboard and removing it requires twisting and pulling, which could damage the pins.
Now, I've got to figure out replacement software for publishing. I was using Adobe software for decades. I'm also tired of how resource heavy and ridiculous it is dealing with activation and verification software.
I've switched to LibreOffice for word processing. There's RevPDF for that. Now, I need publishing software that has native Arabic text support. I thought that Affinity was a good option, but it requires subscription to 3rd-party RTL software. That seems like a circus.
I hate to admit it, but I just may end up running Adobe InDesign in a VM.
I haven't even tried the new linux version of Shamela. I'm hoping that doesn't break anything since it's not part of the recommended repo.
This kind of thing happens every decade or so.
New technologies, different software, and conflicts with installations. I went through it changing from the first IBMs and Macs with floppy disks to CDs of the Windows 95 OS era. Then it was DVDs in the Windows 7 era. Then, there came USBs and now everything is bootable flash drives and subscriptions with downloads.
There's a learning curve with dinosaurs like me.
When I was young, there was a maximum of 2.5 megabytes for disks and data transfer.
Now, I'm installing 4 terabyte SATA hard drives and I still need more space.
What makes it worth it to me is being able to research Islam and study with increasing efficiency; being able to create, edit, and publish digitally without going through gatekeepers and paywalls.
