@cheapsellotape @RMGreenwich @UltimaThule0000 @fingerpostblog @mringster I wonder why Queen Victoria didn’t awarded the Arctic Medal to Benjamin Leigh Smith and the crew of the Eira, for their two voyages to Franz Josef Land in 1880 and 1881-1882?

From my point of view, they would have definitely deserved this honour, without forgetting Bob the dog!

For today’s #EYAExpedition theme, we have some photos of the crew of the Eira, stranded in ice during an Arctic expedition undertaken by B. Leigh Smith in the 1880s (PRONI ref D4131/F/6). These photos were presented to Henry Gore-Booth in recognition of his help in their rescue!
