Key conclusions from #DHUM2024 policy dialogue on Somali diaspora humanitarianism, w. focus on the relation to the international humanitarian system. 1) Recognize diaspora contributions, 2) build trust, 3) more communication than coordination

Diaspora Humanitarianism in complex crisis seminar and policy dialogue in @uonbi @IDS_UONBI:

Key take aways:
》Somali Diaspora aid reflects long-term mutual support systems and religious obligations l, which makes the help quicker, agile and resilient but also difficult to control and coordinate.
》Even though the diaspora and international Humanitarian systems both aim to alleviate suffering and save lives, the relationship between the two systems is characterized by distrust and lack of cooperation.
》The excessive focus on the risk that financial transfers from the diaspora can contribute to terrorism constrains diaspora Humanitarianism and hinders the acknowledgement and promotion of this informal aid systems.

Collaboration between vernacular humanitarianism and international humanitarian actions should go beyond collective resource mobilisation and embody honest communication, address power imbalances and share knowledge. #DHUM2024
