Esta galardonada foto de 1967, tomada por Rocco Morabito, fue titulada "El beso de la vida". Muestra a dos operarios eléctricos, Champion Randall y JD Thompson, en la parte superior de un poste de electricidad.

Ambos habían estado realizando el mantenimiento de rutina cuando Champion rozó una de las líneas de baja tensión en la parte superior del poste de electricidad. Más de 4.000 voltios entraron en su cuerpo, y al instante se detuvo su corazón (una silla eléctrica emplea alrededor de 2.000 voltios).

Su arnés de seguridad evitó una caída, y Thompson, que había estado ascendiendo por debajo de él, rápidamente lo alcanzó y se realizó la respiración boca a boca. No fue capaz de realizar la reanimación cardiopulmonar, dadas las circunstancias, pero continuó la respiración boca a boca, manteniendo activos los pulmones de Champion hasta que sintió un ligero pulso; a continuación, se desabrochó el arnés y descendió con él sobre su hombro.

Thompson y otros trabajadores le realizaron RCP en el suelo a Champion, cuya respiración y ritmo cardíaco fueron paulatinamente restablecidos. Luego llegaron los paramédicos y la recuperación de Champion fue completa. Su compañero le había salvado la vida con lo que en la foto parece un beso. El hombre sobrevivió y vivió hasta 2002, cuando murió de insuficiencia cardiaca a la edad de 64.

Thompson sigue viviendo. La fotografía fue publicada en periódicos de todo el mundo, y ganó el Premio Pulitzer en 1968.
