The Agony of Fulani Herders in Plateau State

On a daily basis, voiceless, defenseless, and helpless Fulani herders across Plateau State continue to bury their loved ones, being killed in repeated attacks by Berom militias and their cohorts.

Yet, while these attacks continue, those determined to control the narrative are busy twisting the story before the cameras and portraying the entire situation as nothing but “Christian genocide.”

Let us be clear: every life lost is a tragedy, whether the victim is Fulani, Berom, Irigwe, Mushere, or any other ethnic group. But justice cannot be selective, and sympathy must not be reserved for one side alone.

Those who constantly demonise Fulani and Muslims while ignoring the suffering of Fulani victims must answer a simple question: Do Fulani lives not matter?

Why are the deaths of Fulani herders so easily ignored, dismissed, or rationalised? Why is every attack involving a Fulani victim conveniently forgotten, while every incident involving a Christian victim is amplified nationally and internationally?

The Fulani do not need propaganda to mourn their dead. They bury their loved ones, mourn in silence, and continue with their lives. But their silence should never be mistaken for weakness, cowardice, or acceptance of injustice.

And when some aggrieved individuals resort to reprisal attacks after repeatedly losing their relatives and livestock, the response should not be collective demonisation of an entire ethnic group. Every perpetrator must be individually identified and held accountable, regardless of whether the person is Fulani, Berom, Irigwe, Mushere, or from any other community.

The disturbing reality is that the cycle of violence is being made worse by people who deliberately distort facts, conceal the identity of perpetrators, and manipulate the suffering of innocent victims for ethnic, religious, or political purposes.

If there is truly a commitment to peace and justice in Plateau State, then stop the double standards. Stop selective outrage. Stop collective criminalisation. Stop weaponising religion and ethnicity.

Investigate every killing. Name every perpetrator. Protect every innocent community. Prosecute every criminal.

The blood of a Fulani herder is not cheaper than the blood of a farmer. A Muslim life is not worth less than a Christian life. Justice must have one standard for everyone.

The Fulani people deserve justice, protection, and the right to mourn their dead without their suffering being erased or rewritten.
