When a piece of existing media exists and an adaptation or sequel is made the creators of the new media have an unspoken agreement with the audience to create something in the spirit of what came before.

If they instead arbitrarily change the traits of characters to inject messaging about their pet cause it not only reduces the quality of the show but is massively disrespectful to the existing audience.

Projects that do this will always fail no matter how many people argue for them.
