With war between the US, Israel, and Iran seemingly getting closer, one question remains: Are we witnessing a massive show of force designed to pressure Tehran into backing down, or is Washington genuinely preparing for a military strike? The scale of US and Israeli military movements across the Middle East raises serious questions about their intentions. Is this a strategy to intimidate Iran and force it to reconsider its regional policies and demands, or are these deployments part of a much larger plan for war? In my opinion, the possibility of a military confrontation cannot be dismissed. However, military pressure does not necessarily mean that a decision to attack has already been made. It could also be an attempt to strengthen the US and Israel's negotiating position and force Iran to make concessions without triggering a devastating regional conflict. The real question is whether these movements are meant to prevent a war or prepare for one.

Israel wants wider strikes on Iran that would target nuclear and missile sites as well as critical infrastructure, with Netanyahu even seeking an operation aimed at regime change. Yet Iran’s missile and drone forces remain largely intact, and attacks on key infrastructure could invite retaliation against Israeli and Gulf energy facilities. A broad campaign therefore risks expanding into a prolonged regional war instead of meeting Israel’s goals. Compounding the problem, the defense capacity and weapons stockpiles of the United States and its allies are constrained.

A continuation of Netanyahu’s transitional government after Israel’s election would give Trump the political space to authorize a joint attack on Iran. The timing of military action, however, would not necessarily align with the U.S. election. Iran could launch a retaliatory strike before the American vote, potentially affecting the result and discouraging Trump from joining an Israeli operation. Alternatively, Israel might carry out an independent strike to pave the way for U.S. bombers to enter the theater a few days after the election.

Even reaching a nuclear deal would not prevent military action, because the timeline for monitoring and enforcing the agreement is assessed as longer than the time Iran would need to violate it and obtain a nuclear bomb.
