Political disagreement is no excuse for abandoning dignity and basic decency.

Rahul Gandhi and the Congress repeatedly speak about democracy, respect and constitutional values. But those values must also be reflected in words and conduct. Mocking or making objectionable remarks about a woman especially the President of a friendly nation does not strengthen democracy; it diminishes the standards expected from national political leadership.

If Congress wants to lecture the country about values, it must first demonstrate those values in its own public discourse. Respect for women cannot be selective, and dignity cannot depend on political convenience.

India deserves a politics of responsibility, maturity and respect, not rhetoric that lowers the dignity of public life. Respect for women is a reflection of our values and culture.

Leadership requires maturity, restraint and a sense of responsibility which, clearly, Mr. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress lack.
