Introducing the final of four fantastic Sonic Labs mentors, @capitELIst!
We asked Eli from our team at the Fantom Foundation a few questions about himself and what he's bringing to the Sonic Labs teams as a mentor 👇
Can you share a bit about yourself?
Law was my midlife crisis degree. Before that, I did what I was expected to do with an MBA. I have always loved the intersection of finance, technology, and law and have not looked back since working in fintech and crypto law, a field that evolves daily.
I first discovered crypto when returning from a libertarian conference. I lent someone $30 for his cab fare. He repaid in BTC. That was 2015. Two years later, during the ICO boom, I was working at a crypto VC where we invested in Avalanche, Fantom, Hashgraph, Solana, Polkadot, and Tezos.
It was there I first learned of Andre Cronje. In 2018, I first met Michael Kong and the rest of the Fantom team in Seoul and Sydney. In 2022, I joined the team as legal counsel.
What will you focus on with the teams?
I bet I will conclude our mentor session recommending that you obtain advice that accounts for your specific legal circumstances from a lawyer in the jurisdiction you operate in.
But until I spoil things with legal disclaimers, we can discuss how to approach risk, governance, and regulation; how to handle your relevant commercial relationships, understanding your data privacy and IP issues, and time permitting, a bird-eye review of securities law, AML/KYC requirements, and should you have it, we can overcome your fear of lawyers. (Jurisphopia I think it’s called.)
What do you like to see in early-stage teams?
For me, it’s all about the team. I like to see a founder team of dreamers, builders, and doers. It takes dreamers to see a need that no one else has seen and dream up a solution to a problem. It takes builders to build a tower brick by brick, and maybe sometimes test in prod (not legal advice). It takes doers to get shit done, to knock on doors and virtual meetings. I like spending time with such people, but mostly, with an enterprising innovator who excels at all three: s/he dreams, builds, and does.
We are excited for Eli to be a mentor to the Sonic Labs teams.

On @LightspeedPodHQ, @AndreCronjeTech talks about dApp developers being the Fantom Foundation's target audience 💬
“That’s our client.”
After all, these are the innovative builders that bring utility and users to #Fantom.

Introducing the first of four fantastic Sonic Labs mentors, @AndreCronjeTech!
Andre Cronje is co-founder and director at the Fantom Foundation. And he builds cool sh*t.
Projects receive direct mentorship during incubation. So what are you waiting for to apply?!
1/ Fantom Sonic is set to enable developers to build applications with unprecedented performance.
We're now excited to announce Sonic Labs, an incubator for developers to build innovative dApps ready for the Sonic mainnet.
Prepare your applications NOW!
How to get started 👇
We just ended 2 weeks of the Sonic closed testnet processing ERC-20 swaps, and it didn't disappoint:
~4,000 TPS at 1.3-second finality, 24/7 ⚡
For the next 24 hours, the testnet will be unavailable as we revert to processing transactions that resemble real traffic.
CORRECTION:
We tagged the wrong account from @RequestFinance. Christophe Fonteneau (@chfonteneau), founding member and Head of Strategy & Partnerships, will join Sonic Labs as a mentor to provide compliance and payroll support 📷
We apologize for the mistake!
Meet the Sonic Labs Four 🦸♂️
Our exceptional mentors are ready to guide and support the Sonic Labs incubator’s chosen teams.
💡 Andre Cronje (@AndreCronjeTech) from @FantomFDN to provide overall project mentorship.
🔮 Marc Tillement (@KemarTiti) from @PythNetwork to offer go-to-market and protocol design guidance.
⚖️ Eli Bernstein (@capitELIst) from @FantomFDN to contribute to company structure and legal guidance.
💵 Christophe Lassuyt (@LassuytChristop) from @RequestFinance to add compliance and payroll support.
We’ll highlight each mentor next week and delve further into their area of expertise 🌟
We think Sonic’s ability to run a validator on an $80 Raspberry Pi is pretty epic.
How epic? Someone brought up the guidance system on the Apollo 11 🚀
Ok, maybe less of a "giant leap for mankind" and more of a small step for blockchain. But epic nonetheless. Take a look 👇
Today, #Fantom is thrilled to announce the launch of the #FantomSonic testnet environment!
Sonic’s three main upgrades include:
• Fantom Virtual Machine, which offers drastically faster smart contract execution compared to the old EVM.
• Carmen database storage, which uses a more efficient data structure to offer up to a 90% storage reduction, lowering costs for validators.
• Optimized Lachesis consensus mechanism, providing an improved transaction pool.
With these improvements, Sonic is anticipated to achieve 2,000+ transactions per second with ultra-short finality. Additionally, Sonic’s reduced storage requirements (from 11 TB to less than 1 TB for archive nodes) makes it far more affordable and accessible for anyone to launch validators and participate in network consensus.
Check out our closed testnet at https://t.co/FQyRxvWMtG where we showcase the maximum limits of Sonic, or interact with our open testnet at https://t.co/Rge4aakGiD to experience the speed of Sonic first-hand.
Fantom Sonic mainnet is scheduled for spring 2024 and will allow new markets to adopt blockchain technology previously hindered by limited transaction throughput and slow finality. We envision a new era of DeFi platforms, blockchain games, and many other applications that can leverage the speed and scalability of Sonic.
