🔸Since the beginning of 2023, unrest has been brewing in Manipur for multiple reasons, but on May 3, 2023, violent clashes broke out at various locations during a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM).

🔸The solidarity march was called to protest against a recent order by the Manipur High Court directing the state government to recommend to the Centre for inclusion of the Meitei community in the state list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) within four weeks.

🔸The court’s order, released on April 14, 2023, re-ignited the historical tensions between the valley-residing Meitei community and the state’s hill tribes, primarily Nagas and Kukis.

🔸But here is also another major factor that has triggered the current face-off: the state government’s DRIVE AGAINST DRUG AND POPPY CULTIVATION.
Fueling this conflict are also the issues of illegal immigration and the demand to implement National Register of Citizens (NRC).

🔸New villages are emerging in reserved forest lands and poppy plantations are spreading to newer areas because of the influx of Myanmar refugees belonging to Kuki-Chin-Zomi-Mizo community.

🔸There has been unnatural population growth in the hills. There is a huge gap in the decadal growth rate of population between the valley and the hills in the 2011 Census,16 per cent in the valley as against 40 per cent in the hills.

The Meitei community is possibly the only indigenous community not protected by the Indian constitution under ST list. It might be one of the few communities, not just in India but globally, that continues to adhere to its indigenous way of life. They maintain a connection to their roots by preserving and venerating the forest. In the event that an old tree must be cut down due to circumstances, they conduct rituals seeking forgiveness. Their emotional attachment to the land is profound. Please find below pictures from Konthoujam Lairembi, one of the many places of worship in the Imphal valley, where annual prayer ceremonies are held.
