Considering she came from a lineage that had already produced seven Arkansas Tech University engineering graduates, it might be natural to assume that Lauren Bradford felt at least some pressure to continue the family tradition.
Turns out nothing could be further from the truth.

When Juan Leon, Hunter Mathis and Collin Easterling of Hope and Ryan Nanthalangsy of Sheridan were freshmen at Arkansas Tech University, they would joke with each other about one day making it to the finals of the VEX U Robotics World Championship.
Back then, they were newcomers to an Arkansas Tech robotics program that was rebuilding from the COVID-19 pandemic and made its first appearance at the world championship in 2023. They learned from elder ATU robotics club members like Thomas Dang, Chris Osborne and Braden Pierce, as well as their coach and club advisor, ATU faculty member Jacob Weidenfeller.
Slowly but surely, Easterling, Leon, Mathis and Nanthalangsy became the driving forces of a little engine that not only could…it did.
Arkansas Tech finished top 2 at the 2026 VEX U Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, Mo., and had the opportunity to compete in the finals dome against the eventual world champions from Auburn University.

Dr. Bill Hardgrave is an internationally recognized expert in radio frequency identification (RFID) technology who has progressed through the ranks of academia to become the president of the University of Memphis.
But he’s still the same person who grew up seven miles from the nearest paved road in rural Johnson County and arrived at Arkansas Tech University seeking access to a better life through higher education.
“I didn’t know it at the time, but looking back it was probably the most transformational time of my life,” said Hardgrave when asked about his experience as an undergraduate student at ATU. “For somebody who didn’t know anything about college, the experience I had here and the education I received here set the foundation for everything else I’ve accomplished. I don’t know where I would be or what I would have done without this foundation, both from the education side and the experience.”
Hardgrave received the highest honor his alma mater may bestow upon an individual when he was inducted into the ATU Hall of Distinction under the Distinguished Alumnus category during spring 2026 commencement at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

Charles “Chuck” Gordon did not graduate from Arkansas Tech University, but he adopted it as his own more than a half-century ago.
“(ATU) represents the hometown university,” said Gordon. “It’s my hometown. We came to Russellville in 1973 and it became our home. It’s Mayberry. Russellville went from 9,000 people to 30,000. Tech went from 3,000 students to 10,000. My success in Russellville has mirrored the success of the community and of Arkansas Tech. When you’re in Russellville and this is your home, you root for the home team. I root for Tech athletically and academically.”
Gordon’s loyalty to and affection for Arkansas Tech was recognized when he was inducted into the ATU Hall of Distinction under the Distinguished Service category during spring 2026 commencement at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.
