The brown water at Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park’s cascading fountain is sediment stirred up from two water lines that had been out of service for years.

The National Park Service said it’s temporary as they continue fine-tuning operations after the May reopening. They expect the water to run clean again in the next 24-36 hours.

This is a common startup issue when reactivating long-dormant plumbing systems.
