before i say anything, pls, know i completely respect other people's headcanons & this post is not meant to minimize that, whatsoever. with that warning out of the way:

one of the biggest things i think you lose when you assume that 'mike is being dishonest about his feelings' is just how perfectly will is shown to understand him, especially throughout s4.

he catches every time that mike's slipping into worry, accurately notices when he needs space or cheering up or reassurance or hope, & he quite literally is written to have "nailed" the core of what mike was feeling – even when mike himself was struggling to verbalize it. he also knows exactly what buttons to press to make him feel better or to get him 'unstuck' when fear paralyzes him.

to me, all of that is a big part of what makes byler a very uniquely precious dynamic. and, for that very reason, i feel like seeing mike's feelings as "fake" can risk undermining just how well will KNOWS mike: how well he can read all of his tales, how well can infer the why behind his mood shifts, and how instinctively he seems to grasp what he needs to do in response to each of them.

it also makes s5 vol. 1 byler extremely buzzy. cause you see will feeling hopeful enough to test the waters and you can't help but go 'ohhhh, he's finally sensing it, he's finally sensing it'.

plus, will deciding he was wrong later on doesn't give the 'hunch' any less credit. he's, after all, the kind of person who'd downplay his intuition if the risk of being mistaken could be losing or burdening a loved one.

but, as has been previously established, one thing about will byers is that his first hunches about mike wheeler are very often right. so, even if he loves to discredit himself once fear starts creeping in, i #know for a fact that what he initially saw in mike was real.

How can anyone watch this and not feel something? We’ve been there for him, and he’s been there for so many of us too. Sometimes you don’t even realize how much someone is helping you just by being there.

I think that’s what makes this so special. We found comfort in Noah, and somehow, he found comfort in us too. There’s so much love in that. ❤️
