Why WYO: This little guy is the Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), Wyoming's state bird. The Meadowlark was designated the state's bird in 1927. Wyoming has this state bird in common with 5 other states but, we did it first, before it was cool.

Why WYO: While going West on I-80 from Cheyenne, you've likely seen old Abe judging your driving. Lincoln was first built in 59' on the summit of the Lincoln Highway. He was moved to his perch on I-80 in 69'. His craggy features reflecting the mountains.

Why WYO: You may know Wyoming has high wind but did you know that Wyoming has the most commercial vehicle blow-overs of all the states. Most other states classify strong winds as "Gusts over 15 MPH" but for us, we just call it Wednesday!

Why WYO: These are the Piedmont Charcoal Kilns that sit on the edge of the ghost town of Piedmont. They were built in 1869 to supply charcoal for the iron smelting industry in Utah. They stand 30 feet tall by 30 feet wide at the base.

Why WYO: Did you know that many of the original train tracks from the Cheyenne Train Depot still lie beneath the concrete? It actually created challenges when building the new splash pad downtown.

Why WYO: These steps are all that remain of the Iowa Center School in Goshen County. At it's best in 1926, the school held 98 students. The high school was discontinued in 1944 with a graduation of 2. The building was closed and dismantled in 1960.

Why WYO: The KC Ranch Standoff near Kaycee took place in 1892. Nate Champion was accused of cattle rustling by the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. It's said Nate held off 50 men until they set his cabin ablaze and shot him while fleeing.

Why WYO: If you've driven the backroads around Chugwater, you've likely passed this butte formation. These are part of the Goshen Hole erosional lowlands. The region was a major travel route for many people during the mid 1800's.

Why WYO: If you've been downtown, you've likely have seen the Tivoli Building. It was built back in 1892 during Cheyenne's infancy. The first floor was a saloon and eatery while the second was of course: a brothel.

Why WYO: Did you know that famous outlaw Robert LeRoy Parker or "Butch Cassidy" got the name Butch while working as a butcher in Rock Springs? He took the name Cassidy from his outlaw mentor: Mike Cassidy.

Why WYO: Did you know that in Wyoming, anyone found leaving a fence gate open is legally subject to a fine of up to $750?

Why WYO: Did you know that in 1921, the state created a law prohibiting photography of bunnies from January to April without an official permit? This law was eventually thrown out. Regardless, the creator of this photo will remain unnamed.

Why WYO: A tradition started in 1950 by the Farthing Family; a young Shetland Pony was donated to the University of Wyoming named Cowboy Joe to be their mascot. To this day, there have been 5 ponies that have held the Cowboy Joe name.
