I'm sending my prayers and love to Rachel and Jon, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, the 23-year-old Berkeley-born American, who lost his arm to a grenade attack before being abducted by Hamas. Hersh was attending a music festival in Israel last October 7. Hersh was one of six young hostages whose bodies the IDF recovered from a tunnel beneath Rafah last week. Autopsies revealed that all six were executed the previous day. Jon and Rachel spoke out tirelessly about their son and the other hostages who are from all over the world and from every religious background — Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, and Christian. During Hersh’s 331 days in captivity, Rachel made herself the archetypal mother with pleas, to all sides for mercy compassion, peace, and healing. Her voice reached people all over the world. Her calls for a ceasefire were largely ignored by both sides.
