#Azerbaijan will justify its upcoming military attack against #Armenia with the false thesis that it's allegedly 'liberating' 4 villages belonging to it in #Tavush. However, this aggression is driven by broader goals. The planning of a joint aggression against Armenia by #Russia and Azerbaijan can be expected from the publications of pro-government experts and media in Azerbaijan.

#Baku's modus operandi over the past 30 years has been to invent information "justifications" before military offensives. Aliyev is attempting to persuade his domestic audience and international actors that Armenia is occupying #Azerbaijani territories and refusing a peaceful resolution, thus forcing Azerbaijan to resort to force.

He either accuses Armenia of initiating attacks or portrays Azerbaijan as merely responding to "#Armenian provocations."

The presence of aggressive propaganda against Armenia in the Azerbaijani media was acknowledged by Toivo Klaar, the European Union's special representative for the South Caucasus.

Today he stated: "Threats against Armenia in Azerbaijani media channels are unacceptable. Genuine negotiations on border delimitation are needed, and all territorial disputes must be settled peacefully and as part of an agreed process."

#Klaar highlighted the necessity for real negotiations on border demarcation and the peaceful resolution of territorial disputes, echoing the sentiments of the #EU. Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on certain rules and legal bases for border demarcation on October 6, 2022, in #Prague. The meeting was attended by Ilham #Aliyev, Emmanuel #Macron, Charles #Michel, and Nikol #Pashinyan, who all signed the agreement.

During this meeting, it was also decided to deploy #EuropeanUnion observers to the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Following Azerbaijan's large-scale military aggression on September 13, during which it occupied an area of 150-200 square kilometres from Armenia, and under international pressure, Aliyev not only agreed to deploy observers but also to demarcate borders based on the Alma-Ata declaration.

However, Aliyev later reneged on these agreements and meetings, which deepened the #West's political, security, and military cooperation with Armenia.

The Armenian government has recently publicly announced that it is seriously considering joining the European Union. Armenia has also initiated significant security and defence cooperation with #USA's allies such as #France, #Greece, #India, and other European countries.

Through Western efforts, Armenia is now able to import weapons and ammunition through Georgian territory. Without this cooperation, Armenia would have likely lost its sovereignty long ago. Russia now sees that Armenia is attempting to leave its sphere of influence. #Yerevan not only intends to leave the Collective Security Treaty Organization (#CSTO) but also, in the event of becoming a candidate for EU membership, will leave the Eurasian Economic Union (#EEU).

An unprecedented meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is scheduled for April 5 in Brussels.

A new agreement between Armenia and the European Union is being prepared, which will include important economic components. Alongside the start of visa liberalization negotiations, Armenia expects the EU to provide preferential conditions for exporting its products to European markets.

Armenia also anticipates becoming a beneficiary of the European Peace Fund and receiving security support.

One of the key outcomes of the April 5 meeting could be an agreement on specific dates and a roadmap for European Union membership. The EU and the #US are also expected to prepare a financial support package for Armenia, amounting to billions of dollars, which will be allocated for economic capacity, investments, infrastructure and product modernization, and market diversification.

However, amidst these developments, there is an extremely concerning situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, with the possibility that Azerbaijan may launch a new military attack under Russian instructions, to 'liberate' these four villages.

Even if those four villages are handed over to Azerbaijan, Baku and #Moscow will still find excuses to undermine the rapprochement process between Armenia and the West. Military attacks against Armenia will weaken Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government, leading to internal political tensions and instability, with political forces of Russian origin creating chaos.

It is not excluded that Russian troops in Armenia will also initiate aggressive actions, as seen in #Crimea in 2014.

Given recent frequent reports by Armenian national security bodies on alleged cases of terrorism, it can be argued that Russia, Azerbaijan, and pro-Russian political forces in Armenia will attempt a coup. The most dangerous aspect of this scenario is Azerbaijan's military attack, which could trigger internal political instability and chaos.

Leaving Russia's sphere of influence and establishing closer relations with the USA, France, and the EU is important not only for Armenia but also for the West itself.

Preventing Azerbaijan's upcoming military attack should be a priority for the USA and the EU in this region. Armenia is capable of taking significant steps towards deepening cooperation with the West and becoming its most important partner in the South Caucasus. While I hope that Armenia and #Georgia will join the EU together, this is a long-term perspective.

Armenia faces serious security problems today, right here and now. Azerbaijan's planned attack will be instigated by Russia to punish Armenia for its pro-Western stance. April 5 should mark a day of making quality decisions regarding cooperation between Armenia and the West.

However, there's a serious security threat planned by Russia and Azerbaijan that could change the situation dramatically. It's crucial to pressure Azerbaijan with the threat of serious sanctions to prevent it from being used as a tool for Russia's blackmail against Armenia. I hope this factor will not be overlooked.
