Nifty IT is down 25%+ YTD. $50 billion wiped out so far this year.

The obituary is already being written. “AI just killed Indian IT.” That’s the narrative.

So we did something simple. We asked someone who has seen this movie before.

As part of our Decipher with Dezerv series, we hosted Trideep Bhattacharya (CIO, @EdelweissMF) someone who has tracked Indian IT through 4–5 disruption cycles over 25 years, including the Dot-com Bubble.

Here’s what stood out:

1. Every tech cycle “kills” IT services. What actually dies is the old version of it. After Y2K, demand was supposed to collapse.  After SaaS, software was supposed to become self-serve. After cloud, infrastructure was supposed to disappear.What actually happened? The previous revenue pools shrank, but new, larger ones emerged faster.

2. The industry’s core skill isn’t coding. It’s adapting to where value shifts. In 2002, ~60% of revenues came from application development. Today it’s ~35%. Testing fell from ~25% to ~10%. Meanwhile, consulting, infra, BPO which were negligible earlier became meaningful. This isn’t just diversification. It’s evidence that IT services follow value, not technology.

3. The real bottleneck for AI isn’t capability. It’s enterprise readiness. 70% of global banking transactions still run on legacy systems. The real work is integrating messy systems, handling edge cases, ensuring compliance, managing risk etc. AI can write code. It cannot take responsibility. And that’s what enterprises actually pay for. The gap between “what AI can do” and “what enterprises can adopt instantly” is high.

4. AI may reduce effort per task but increase total work done. As coal became more efficient, we didn't use less of it, we powered the world with it. This is Jevons Paradox in action. When something becomes cheaper and faster, we use it more, in more places. Similarly, if software becomes cheaper to build, companies that couldn't afford a custom CRM or supply chain tool in 2023 will find these projects viable by 2028. The addressable market grows, not shrinks.

5. The market is pricing fear. The data is showing resilience. The narrative says demand is collapsing. But software engineering job postings are near 2-year highs. This divergence isn’t noise. It’s a signal.

The known risk is loud. The unknown opportunity is silent.

A heartbreaking story from the snow-covered hills of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh.

Two young cousins, 19-year-old Vikas Rana and 13-year-old Piyush, went to Bharmani Mata temple on January 23. Sudden heavy snowfall, freezing winds and lost paths trapped them in the mountains. They did not survive.

What stayed behind was their dog.
