There are battles you can win and still regret ever fighting.

Whatever anyone thinks of the Catholic Church, one thing is difficult to dispute: it is one of the most organised, disciplined and influential religious institutions on earth.

This is not an organisation that appeared yesterday.

It has survived kings, emperors, dictators, revolutions, wars, scandals and governments that once thought themselves invincible. Governments come and go. Political parties rise, enjoy their season and eventually become chapters in history books. The Catholic Church has been playing the long game for centuries.

That is why I find the growing hostility towards senior Catholic voices in Nigeria (the most recent being Cardinal Onaiyekan) politically unwise.

Cardinals and priests have criticised governments before. They criticised previous administrations and they will criticise future ones. When religious leaders believe that hardship, injustice or poor governance deserves public attention, politicians are perfectly entitled to disagree with them.

But disagreement is one thing. Sending political attack dogs after priests through the media is another. Frankly, it is foolish politics.

If a Cardinal says something the government believes is wrong, answer him with facts. Show Nigerians the figures. Explain the policy. Demonstrate where he has got it wrong. That is what confident governments do.

Turning criticism from the pulpit into political warfare merely amplifies the criticism. Yesterday, perhaps only a few thousand people heard the homily. By tomorrow morning, after politicians have spent hours attacking the priest, millions of Nigerians will be searching for the very speech they want discredited.

As the old saying goes, when you throw a stone into the market, you never know whose relatives it will hit.

The Catholic Church also possesses something politicians routinely underestimate: structure.

Parishes. Dioceses. Archdioceses. Schools. Hospitals. Universities. Charitable organisations. Professional associations. Communities reaching from major cities to villages where political press statements barely travel.

And beyond Nigeria sits a worldwide institution with diplomatic, intellectual and humanitarian influence.

You may disagree with Catholic doctrine. You may dislike a particular Cardinal. You may think a priest has crossed the line from religion into politics. Quite alright. Challenge his argument.

But attempting to intimidate an institution because some of its clergy are saying uncomfortable things about your government is a spectacularly poor strategy.

Tinubu's government should understand something very simple: criticism is not rebellion.

A government does not become stronger by surrounding itself with people who tell the President what he wants to hear. Sometimes the people irritating you are precisely the people telling you what your praise singers will not.

Every government needs people willing to say, “Mr President, things are not going well.”

The sensible response is not, “Who sent this man?” It is, “Is he right?”

There is another proverb worth remembering: the child who says his mother will not sleep will also remain awake.

A prolonged political confrontation with the Catholic hierarchy benefits nobody. Certainly not a government already dealing with economic hardship, public frustration and declining trust in political institutions.

The APC should pick its battles carefully.

Politics is not merely about having the power to fight. Wisdom is knowing which fights are worth having.

You can defeat a critic on television tonight and discover six months later that you created ten thousand more critics in the process. That is how people win battles and lose wars.

The Catholic Church has been around long enough to understand that lesson.

Politicians should too.

One company sent their drivers to our facility for an eye test to check if they're fit to drive. I found one of them has a refractive error (astigmatism) and glasses were prescribed.

Funny how the man rejected the glasses and tried to bribed me to write to the company that he's fit for the work and doesn't need the glasses.
