Today Labour’s Gibraltar surrender deal - announced today with no debate - has once again undermined British sovereignty, repeating the mistakes of the Windsor Framework and the Chagos debacle.

The terms of the deal are shocking: Spanish officials will now conduct border checks within Gibraltar. Spain can withdraw individuals’ residency in Gibraltar, even if they already live there. Goods sold in Gibraltar must comply with EU regulations. Gibraltar is now subject to a new ‘transaction tax’ to align it with the EU. And Gibraltar must adopt new EU laws or the agreement will automatically be terminated.

The practical effect is that foreign officials will decide who and what can enter British territory. British citizens’ fingerprints will be taken and passports checked within our own territory.

At the same time, Spain has conceded nothing about its claim to Gibraltar. No self-respecting British government should be willing to accept this.

To make matters worse, Parliament and the British public have only seen the final text of this deal today, but it takes effect tomorrow. Labour have shut us out of this process and are avoiding scrutiny.

A Reform Government will stand up for our national interest and overturn this one-sided, disgraceful deal.

There can be no shared sovereignty between Britain and Spain. Gibraltar is British, not Spanish, and that is how it must remain. This is not up for negotiation or dilution by a thousand individual concessions.

And there must be no border between Gibraltar and the United Kingdom. Spanish or EU border and customs officials must not be allowed to operate in Gibraltar, or have a say in who and what can enter our territory. And it’s today. The 12th of July.

Almost 1,100 years ago, on this exact day, England became a country. Almost no one knows it.

The island was old long before it had a name. Farmers. Romans. Saxons. Then out of the sea came the Danes. ⚔️

They came to raid. They stayed to farm. And one hard question hung over the whole land.

Two peoples, Saxon and Dane, one small island. Whose country was it now?

Alfred of Wessex held the last corner and turned the tide. But he wanted more than a truce. One country. For both peoples. One England.

He died before he could build it. 🔥

So his family finished it. His son took back town after town. His daughter Æthelflæd led the armies herself. A woman commanding armies more than 1,000 years ago.

But it was Alfred’s grandson who ended the work.

Æthelstan.

In 927 he rode north and took York, the last Viking crown in England. One man now held every English kingdom.

Then he did something stranger. He called the other kings of Britain to a bridge in the north. A quiet place called Eamont. 📜

Scots. Welsh. The kings of the north. There, by the river, they bent the knee.

And that morning he took a new title. Not king of Wessex. Not king of the Saxons.

King of the English. All of them.

That bridge, on this day in 927, is the closest thing we have to the morning a country began. ⚖️

He made it real. One law, coast to coast. One coin, struck the same everywhere. On it he wears a crown, not a war helmet.

Then in 937 they came to destroy it. Vikings, Scots, the men of the north. The largest army the island had ever seen. They met him at Brunanburh.

Dawn to dark. Five kings fell. And when the sun went down, Æthelstan was still standing. 🏛️

England had been tested. And England had held.

He left no son. He died in 939 and chose a quiet abbey at Malmesbury. Alone, in the country he had made.

But it never came apart. Every king and queen of England since has sat on the throne he built. More than 1,000 years. Unbroken.

You were taught 1066. The Tudors. The wars. But not this. Not the king who made the country. Not the bridge. Not the 12th of July.

Æthelstan. The first king of England. And the one we forgot.

Next year it turns 1,100.

England has a birthday. And now you know when it is. 🇬🇧

You did not choose to be born here. But you inherited a country with a beginning. A name won on a bridge, 1,100 years ago. That is yours. No one can take it from you.

The UK last built a public water reservoir in 1992.

The population has increased by over 10 million in the intervening years. Including a surge of immigration.

Now, the state has the cheek to announce a hosepipe ban. Why is that necessary?

Because no infrastructure has been built to cope with the expanding population.

It rained for the whole of January but not enough reservoirs to catch the water.

Our governments have been absolutely and unrelentingly crap. Short-termist.

Only interested in importing cheap labour. Not a care for the people who live here and want things to work as they do in a civilized country.

The next reservoir, in Havant, is not scheduled for completion till the early 2030s.

Prepare for more hosepipe bans and collapsing sewers.

Britain urgently needs an effective ruling class before we slide into a failed state.

@elliehodges62 Quite right, Ellie, although I'd say the Establishment's purpose is now more sinister than defending the (political) status quo; it's acting as a fifth column against the citizenry.

Farage's defence of tradition and nationhood against this is certainly anti-establishment.

For centuries, English law required ordinary Englishmen to practise with the longbow.

Beginning with Henry III's Assize of Arms in 1252 and strengthened under Edward III in 1363, a series of laws encouraged, and later required, men to train on Sundays.

Years of practice helped produce the legendary longbowmen whose devastating volleys played a decisive role at the Battle of Crécy, Poitiers and Agincourt.

For almost two centuries, skilled longbowmen formed one of the foundations of England's national defence.

Every town and village was expected to have an area known as the butts, where archers honed the skill that became England's greatest military advantage.

The name survives today in hundreds of places across England as Butts Road, Butts Lane or simply The Butts.

The next time you pass one, you're looking at a reminder of a time when defending the realm was considered the responsibility of ordinary people.
