Does Ottawa’s grocery rebate signal a shift to a broader guaranteed basic income? An article authored by Dr. Phoebe Stephens for The Conversation. https://t.co/0R6OWJkiKO
And now we face the inevitable, a grocery retail industry that has strayed far from the ever-elusive 'perfect competition' to an oligopoly. Policymakers saw this coming. If they didn't, they weren't paying attention or need to review some intro to econ & management books.
Compared to pre-pandemic, sales volume is ⬇️, yet profit margins are ⬆️. In early pandemic days, margins jumped from panic buying & they are maintaining those inflated margins by passing the ⬆️ production cost to consumers.
And why wouldn't they? It's the classic profit maximization economic strategy. We made food into a commodity & watched as the grocers grew, benefiting from the efficiencies and economies of scale that came with that growth. We knew consolidation was next, per industry lifecycle.
