n 2020, researchers at Oxford University announced they'd developed a COVID vaccine that cost pennies to make, and that they were giving it away free to the world.

Gates immediately stepped in, using his financial might to pressure Oxford into privatizing the miraculous discovery.

As a result, the vaccine rollout was severely delayed. Nobody knows how many people died because of this.

I was one of the few journalists to cover this story at the time.

Today marks the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, which inaugurates the 16 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳-𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 campaign spanning from November 25 to December 10. A global call to confront the systemic harms that disproportionately affect women, this day serves as a platform for advocacy and a catalyst for deliberate collective action, denouncing the societal and institutional conditions, norms, and power relations that enable, normalise, and sustain violence.

Featuring 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗸𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗻-𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗿𝘂, PSI’s Project Coordinator for health sector projects in West Africa, the conversation will draw on her experience as a registered nurse and union leader in Nigeria and in international arenas to unpack how gender, labour rights, and health policy intersect in primary healthcare workplaces. Convened by the 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘂𝗺 in collaboration with 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, and co-facilitated by 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗶𝗵𝗮 (UNU-IIGH) and 𝗔𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗼 (RESADE), the webinar will further introduce PSI’s work confronting workplace violence and its gender dimensions, share empirical evidence on effective interventions, and surface successes and persistent challenges from diverse African contexts.

𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀| 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗚𝗧𝟰𝗔𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Last month, we held the launch webinar of a new 𝗔𝗝𝗥𝗛 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, where authors of the articles unpacked the challenges and opportunities of operationalising gender transformative approaches (GTAs) in Sexual, Reproductive, and Maternal Health (SRMH) across African contexts.

Their reflections highlighted the politics of methodology, demonstrating how co-designing and co-producing GTAs can disrupt entrenched epistemic hierarchies; how involving peer facilitators and community health workers can sustain gender-transformative praxis within health system; and how engaging men in maternal health programmes can challenge gendered power asymmetries while safeguarding women’s autonomy.

The authors share insights derived from their experiences in various research fields, demonstrating how gender transformative approaches are not merely instrumental technical interventions, but socially and politically contested processes influenced by power relation and participatory practices.
