Deeply devastated by the tragic news from the Gulf of Oman. Three innocent Indian civilian seafarers — Patnala Suresh, Shivanand Chaurasiya, and Aditya Sharma — have lost their lives following a targeted US precision military strike on the commercial oil tanker, M/T Settebello.

These men were not combatants. They were civilian mariners doing their jobs, caught in the crossfire of a geopolitical standoff.

I strongly support the Government of India's swift and firm response in calling out this unacceptable overreach. By summoning the US Chargé d'Affaires to lodge a strong protest and forcefully raising the matter at the United Nations, New Delhi has made it clear that Indian lives are not acceptable “collateral damage”.

While the US enforces its maritime blockade, it must cease and desist from targeting commercial civilian infrastructure and crews. A military strike on an engine room, knowing civilians are on board, is unjustifiable.
Global maritime forces have plenty of non-lethal methods to intercept, redirect, or board non-compliant vessels. Resorting to missile strikes that kill civilian crews must stop immediately. Freedom of navigation must apply to the safety of the sailors who power global trade. I hope india firmly demands this of its US interlocutors since practically every ship in those waters carries Indian crew.

Her name was Dimple Khatri.

She was 29 years old and a law graduate from Patiala, Punjab. For three years, she worked at a logistics company in Phase 11, Mohali.

A colleague named Harjinder Singh Mann had been her friend for those three years.

About three months ago, she stopped taking his calls.

According to the police, that is what set him off. The calls she did not answer. The distance she had started to keep.

During a shift change, when only a few employees were around, he walked up to her while she was sitting at her computer.

What happened next was captured on the company’s CCTV cameras.

She saw him and tried to run. He followed her. He caught her by the hair and dragged her back.

As colleagues rushed toward them to pull him away, he turned the knife on them and continued the attack.

Police say he stabbed her around thirty times with a dagger.

Dimple was rushed to a private hospital, where she was declared dead.

After the attack, Harjinder Singh Mann stabbed himself in the throat. He survived and remains in hospital. Police say he is currently unfit to give a statement.

A murder case has been registered.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Veer Ji Muktidham in Patiala for her cremation. Shopkeepers across the city’s main markets pulled down their shutters in protest.

Her father stood among them.

The associations that shut their shops asked the government for one thing: better security for women at their workplaces.

She had done what women are so often told to do.

She had stepped back. She had stopped answering. She had created distance.

According to the police case, it was the distance itself that he could not accept.
