6/ EVEN MORE POLLING MALPRACTICE
While we are on the subject let’s pour a tall one out for the crack teams at Mainstreet Research, Forum Research and Cardinal Research all of whom decided to slap together a rushed IVR poll from some Toronto stripmall or wherever…and use their paper napkin results to authoritatively declare there would be LIBERAL MAJORITY in the province days before voters elected a PC MAJORITY instead.
This is not a ‘polling miss’. This is not a 19-out-of-20 thing. It is a group of pollsters all trying to generate cheap PR using a technology (IVR) ill suited to capturing the particular geographic and demographic nuances of a jurisdiction like Newfoundland and Labrador. Without access to their raw data I can only assume that all three pollsters failed to compensate for a large Liberal lead in St. John’s that had become completely decoupled from public opinion in the rest of the province.
Mainstreet deserves a special round of applause for releasing a public poll predicting a big Liberal majority while saving for the fine print the fact that they were also acting as the paid internal pollster of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.
While the rest of us contemplate the ethics of that decision, I hope that prospective Mainstreet clients are also contemplating whether the NL Liberals got value for their money.
Sure, Newfoundland and Labrador is notoriously difficult to poll. But bad data is not, in fact, superior to no data at all. But don’t take my word for the quality of this work. Take the word of Mainstreet, Forum and Cardinal themselves.
For too long, too many people have felt that the crowd making decisions aren't taking them seriously.

With a province-wide fire ban still in effect, and multiple wildfires burning in the province over the past while, I thought it was appropriate to share (again) this photo I took three years ago today while covering a wildfire in Conception Bay South.

.@lloyd_parrott says the benefits of the Bay du Nord project must stay in the province.
The current plan to lease an FPSO risks sending work out of province, even as our skilled tradespeople face high unemployment. Meanwhile, a decade of Liberal red tape and missed opportunities has held our offshore industry back.
